2pac – Changes

In this song Tupac talks about how life for blacks are the same thing over and over again and there hasn’t been any change. Anyone who tries to fight back for change gets shot by cops, and the cops are labeled as heroes for shooting a “drug dealer.” But the whole reason why they became a drug dealer in the first place was so that they could feed themselves and their family, otherwise they’re unable to afford anything. They don’t mean to do any harm but they’re still affecting the people who buy the drugs. It’s all a cycle of people getting hurt. Tupac talks about how things would be better off if everyone lived in harmony, but there’s no change. Black people will always have to stay armed and alert for something that may come up because of the whole cycle they’re in.

“Cause both black and white is smokin’ crack tonight
And only time we chill is when we kill each other
It takes skill to be real, time to heal each other
And although it seems heaven sent
We ain’t ready, to see a black President

2pac – Keep Ya Head Up

In this song Tupac talks to the mothers who had to raise up their children alone. He talks to the children who had to grow up with no father wondering about what happened. He says even if things seem impossible to bear and never ending just keep your head up, eventually it WILL get better.

“And it’s crazy, it seems it’ll never let up, but
Please, you got to keep your head up

2Pac – Thug 4 Life

Tupac is one one of the greatest rappers of all time. He’s a legend. In this song he talks about how society is ashamed of the youth. But he explains the way he sees things, he says that the older generation is to blame for the way the youth is. They left the youth a messed up world. The youth is left wondering if role models like Malcom X died for a cause because of how things are still the same. It’s upsetting how things haven’t changed for the better, for what many people sacrificed their lives for. But there’s still people out there suffering, who are the youth supposed to look up to?

“We left em a world that’s cursed
And it hurts
‘Cause any day they’ll push the button
And all come in like Malcolm X or Bobby Hutton died for nothing
Don’t it make you get teary
The world looks dreary
When you wipe your eyes see it clearly

Eminem – Mockingbird

This song was made for Eminem’s daughters, Hailey and Alaina (Lanie). Eminem now has three daughters, he later adopted one. He explains in the song that even though things are really confusing with what’s going on between him and their mother, things will be alright and he will always be there for them. Eminem and his ex wife did not have a good marriage life and it ended up affecting their family a lot. Eminem explains that he never wanted for them, especially their kids, to have a life like this but things happen for a reason. He’s working hard so they can live comfortably and he will always be there for them no matter what.

“Lainie, uncle’s crazy ain’t he?
Yeah, but he loves you girl and you better know it
We’re all we got in this world
When it spins
When it swirls
When it whirls
When it twirls
Two little beautiful girls
Looking puzzled, in a daze
I know it’s confusing you
Daddy’s always on the move
Mama’s always on the news
I try to keep you sheltered from it…”

Eminem – Stan

Eminem is a well known rapper who has made many good songs. One of his songs called “Stan” is about a fan who has tried to reach out to Eminem through phone calls, letters, email, any way possible. But he hasn’t heard anything back from Eminem for months and he begins to go insane and sadly ends up taking the life of his pregnant girlfriend and his own life. Eminem later reaches out explaining how he had just received the letters and was not able to respond back until it was too late. This is not based on a true story but Eminem made this song to let his fans know that he is trying his best to respond and to prevent them from doing something drastic.

“I hope you get to read this letter, I just hope it reaches you in time
Before you hurt yourself, I think that you’ll be doin’ just fine”

Big Sean – World Ablaze

This song was made way back in 2013. I remember listening to some songs in this album and it would get me thinking about life even though I was like 11. He is not as deep as J Cole or Joyner Lucas, he concentrates more on the beat or the flow of his songs. But even though he says a few deep lines in his verses, it got me thinking a lot about things. In this song he sings about people going through painfully rough events (like a mom losing her son or a daughter losing her mom to cancer) but there’s not much for others to do but it say “it’s going to be alright.” Even though it’s a lie, and they know it’s a lie but what else can they do for situations like that?

“Got me thinking, “whats a girl to do, a girl to do?
When her world’s a pool?
And she comes up for air, and it’s walls of flames
And all the stress is all propane
She’s burned again”
Hoping I could make her smile
Take cancer and David Blaine it out
POOF! Disappear, God make an out!”

Joyner Lucas – I’m not Racist

Joyner Lucas is mixed, his mother is white and his father is black. He must have gone through many difficulties in his life just because of his ethnicity. In his song “I’m not Racist” he talks about the thought process or reasonings as to why a black or white person is racist towards the other race. He gives a few reasonings, excuses, scenarios that have gone on in the past so that there’s a stronger connection and understanding to the listener. His ethnicity has helped him understand both perspectives.

“I wish we could trade shoes or we could change lives
So we could understand each other more but that’d take time
I’m not racist
It’s like we livin’ in the same buildin’ but splittin’ the both sides
I’m not racist
But there’s two sides to every story and now you know mine
Can’t erase the scars with a bandage
I’m hopin’ maybe we can come to an understandin’
Agree to disagree, we could have an understandin’
I’m not racist”

Joyner Lucas – Lullaby

This song talks about a person’s life whose struggled through 3 different comforts which later betrayed them. The first verses talks about their relationship with their mother and how close they were, but their bond changes later as they grows up and their mother slowly gives up on taking care of them. The next verse talks about their past relationship with someone which started off loving and caring, but later turned to abuse which caused them to turn to prostitution and affected their life later. The last verse talks about how they needed help with their pain. They saw and heard about drugs like heroin in movies and at school. They ended up using it for their own comfort not knowing how badly it would end up. The whole song talks about recalling when their comforts were once loving or actually comforting, but now it’s completely different and all changed for the worst.

“I wonder if you often think about what you became
And do you ever wonder if you ever truly changed?
Cause honestly I’m lost and I don’t know to blame…
…But we don’t have the type of bond we used to have before
And I ain’t mad at all,
I just wonder if you recall when I laid in your arms and you used to sing to me like…”

Joyner Lucas – I’m Sorry

This song was made in 2016. It talks about suicide through two perspectives, through the view of the person who commits suicide and the people who misses the individual. It shows the frustration and the miserable thought process the individual goes through, what they debate before they decide whether they want to take their life or not. And it shows the regret and frustration their loved ones go through, wondering what they could have done together to prevent this from happening. This was made for anyone going through a tough time and who needs someone to talk to in order to prevent a tragedy. The video gives out the suicide hotlines phone number.

“Cause I got so much that I wanna say to you
I used to shine, now I’m all in the dark
I remember I used to tell you to follow your heart
But goddamn it, look at you now, it’s all of your fault
How could you?
Maybe it’s my fault
I shoulda paid more attention to what you been doing”

J Cole – 1985

In his song, 1985, he talks about how some new rappers in this generation get caught up in the fame and attention they’re receiving, they don’t think ahead. They don’t realize that eventually the teens listening to them right now will eventually grow up and grow out of the phase they’re in. They (the teens) will get tired of listening to the same things they (the rappers) constantly rap about. Their money won’t grow as much as it used to, they’ll start struggling to make as much money. It may be nice for them now, but unless they’re special they won’t stay the center of attention for long. They’ll eventually be forgotten and they’ll no longer be able to depend on their music for money.

Rap: Real rap has a deep and meaningful content and is basically poetry, only with more emotion.
