J. Cole – FRIENDS

Meditation: The practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.

In J Cole’s album, KOD, one of the songs he released was called FRIENDS. It talks about how everyone has gone through some kind of trauma in their childhood. This could cause them to grow up with no hope or ambition because it damages them. It leads them to fall into a cycle of depending on drugs to make them feel stable and alive. They blame everything- from family problems, authorities, politics, etc.- the list goes on and on. He says even though those problems are hard to deal with and it seems better to escape them even if it’s temporarily, it’s bound to catch up to you eventually. It’s better to face your problems than to try to run away from them. He suggests to try meditating instead of depending on medications, even though they’re the exact opposites. Meditating gives you a moment to think through your problems carefully, it gives you space to think of ways to cope with it, different outcomes, what could go wrong, what could go right, etc. It allows you to prepare yourself for whatever problem your facing. While getting intoxicated gets your mind off the problem sometimes. It allows you to escape your problems temporarily. But like J Cole said, it’ll eventually catch up to you.

Introduction

These blog posts are going to be about the explanation behind lyrics. Nowadays some songs are just noise, they don’t have a story or any meaning behind them. But a few are really powerful when you sit down and actually listen to the lyrics. Some songs are based on true stories and has a whole interesting story, which makes the song even more powerful. These blog posts are going to be about songs like that. Hopefully this will go better than my last 🙂
